How to Create a 3D Cube Image with Shading, Texture and Light Tips

A cube looks simple until you try to make it feel solid. Three flat squares can look like a box, a block, a gem, a toy, or a floating object depending on how you use light, perspective, color, and texture.


The good news is that a convincing 3D cube does not require advanced drawing skills. With a graphic design app and a few core ideas, you can build one from basic shapes, then make it feel polished with shading and surface detail. The steps below work in most design tools, including Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, Photoshop, Procreate, Figma, and similar software.

Start with the tools and setup


Before drawing the cube, set up a workspace that makes it easy to compare angles, colors, and shadows.


Use a document size that gives you room to work. A square canvas such as 2000 by 2000 pixels works well for web graphics, practice pieces, and thumbnails. If you plan to print the image, use a larger canvas and a higher resolution.


You will need only a few basic tools:


  • Shape tool or pen tool

  • Selection tool

  • Fill color controls

  • Gradient tool

  • Layer panel

  • Opacity or blending controls

  • Optional texture brushes or image overlays


If your software supports snapping or smart guides, turn them on. They help keep the cube clean and aligned. If it supports layers, place each visible face of the cube on its own layer. That makes shading and texture much easier later.


A cube usually shows three faces:


  • Top face

  • Left face

  • Right face


Each face should have a slightly different value. Value means how light or dark a color is. Even before adding texture, value is what makes the cube read as 3D.


Build the cube from three simple shapes


There are many ways to create a cube, but the easiest beginner method is to draw three connected parallelograms. A parallelogram is like a rectangle pushed sideways. It gives the illusion of depth without needing complex 3D tools.


1. Create the top face


Start with a diamond shape or a tilted square. In many apps, you can draw a square, rotate it 45 degrees, then squash it vertically.


A good beginner shape looks like a flat diamond:


  • The left and right corners sit wide.

  • The top and bottom corners sit closer together.

  • The bottom corner becomes the center point where the side faces meet.


Set this top face to a light color. If your cube is blue, for example, the top might be a pale sky blue. The top plane often receives more light because it faces upward.


2. Duplicate the top edge downward


To create a believable cube, the side faces need to share edges with the top face. Select the left edge of the top face and extend it downward to make the left side. Then do the same with the right edge.


If your app allows direct shape editing, use the pen tool to draw each face as a four-point shape. If not, create a duplicate of your top diamond, move it down, then connect corners with the pen tool.


The cube should now have three connected planes:


  1. A top diamond

  2. A left slanted face

  3. A right slanted face


Make sure there are no small gaps between the faces. Tiny gaps can ruin the illusion, especially when exporting at a smaller size.


3. Set a base color for each face


Choose one main color, then create three versions of it:


  • Light version for the top

  • Medium version for one side

  • Dark version for the other side


For example, a green cube might use mint green on top, grass green on the right side, and deep forest green on the left side.


Do not use pure black for the shadow side unless you want a harsh comic or poster style. A dark version of the same color usually looks more natural.


4. Group the faces


Once the cube shape looks right, group the three faces. Keep each face editable if possible. In many apps, grouping lets you move the cube as one object while still adjusting the individual shapes when needed.


Name the layers clearly if you can:


  • `cube top`

  • `cube left`

  • `cube right`

  • `shadow`

  • `texture`

Add light so the cube feels three dimensional


Light gives the cube its form. Without a clear light source, shading can look random. Pick one direction and stay consistent.


A common setup is light from the upper left. This means:


  • The top face is the lightest.

  • The left or right face depends on the angle, but one side should be medium.

  • The face turned away from the light should be darkest.

  • The cast shadow falls away from the light, usually down and to the right.


Imagine placing a small lamp above the cube on one side. Every shading choice should agree with that lamp.


Use gradients for softer depth


Flat colors can work well, especially for icons. For a more realistic or polished look, add gradients.


Try this beginner-friendly approach:


  1. Select the top face.

  2. Add a subtle linear gradient from lighter near the light source to slightly darker away from it.

  3. Select the medium side face.

  4. Add a gradient that becomes darker as it moves away from the top edge.

  5. Select the dark side face.

  6. Keep it darker overall, but add a small lighter area near the shared top edge.


The key word is subtle. Strong gradients can make the cube look shiny or plastic even when you did not intend that.


Add a cast shadow


A cast shadow anchors the cube to the surface. Without it, the cube may look like it is floating.


Create an ellipse or soft polygon under and behind the cube. Fill it with a dark neutral color, such as deep gray or muted blue. Lower the opacity until it feels natural. Blur it if your software allows blur effects.


The shadow should be darkest near the cube and softer as it moves away. If the light comes from the upper left, place the shadow toward the lower right.


A cube looks more believable when the shadow tells the same story as the highlights.

Add contact shadow


A contact shadow is the tiny dark area where the object touches the ground. It is often darker than the cast shadow but much smaller.


Draw a narrow dark shape directly under the cube. Lower the opacity until it blends into the larger cast shadow. This small detail makes the cube feel heavier and more grounded.


Use perspective without making it complicated


Perspective controls how the cube sits in space. Beginners often make cubes look awkward because the angles do not agree with each other.


For a clean isometric look, keep the left and right edges at matching angles. Isometric cubes are popular in icons, game art, infographics, and UI illustrations because they look 3D while staying neat.


For a more realistic cube, use perspective lines. Imagine the cube edges extending toward distant points on the horizon. In two-point perspective, the left-facing edges point toward one vanishing point, and the right-facing edges point toward another.

If you are just starting, use isometric perspective first. It is easier to control, and it teaches the relationship between the three faces clearly.

Improve the cube with texture


Texture changes the personality of the cube. The same shape can become glass, stone, wood, metal, clay, fabric, or candy by changing surface detail.


Start with the cube shape first. Then add texture on top using clipping masks, layer masks, brushes, or image overlays depending on your software.


Try a paper texture


A paper texture is one of the easiest ways to warm up a digital cube. Add a subtle grain layer above each face. Clip it to the face shape so it does not spill outside the cube.


Set the texture layer to a low opacity. Blend modes like `Multiply`, `Overlay`, or `Soft Light` can help, but do not rely on them blindly. Adjust until the texture supports the shape instead of distracting from it.


Create a metallic cube


A metallic cube needs stronger contrast. Use sharper gradients, bright highlights, and darker shadow areas.


For a polished metal look:


  • Add a narrow highlight near the top edge.

  • Use cool gray or blue-gray shadows.

  • Keep reflections angular.

  • Avoid random noise unless you want brushed metal.


Metal does not have to be gray. Gold, copper, blue chrome, and colorful sci-fi metals can all work if the lighting stays consistent.


Design a wooden cube


Wood texture works best when the grain follows the direction of each face. If the grain runs the same way across all three planes, the cube can look flat.


Use separate texture layers for each face. Rotate the grain slightly to match the plane angle. Add darker lines along the edges to show where the faces meet.


Warm browns, muted yellows, and reddish tones usually feel natural for wood. Keep highlights soft rather than glossy.


Make a glass or crystal cube


Glass is tricky because it depends on transparency, reflections, and edge highlights. Start simple.


Set each face to a low opacity color, then add bright strokes along the edges. Use a light blue, violet, or pale green tint. Add a few internal diagonal lines to suggest refraction.


Do not make every face equally transparent. The overlap areas should appear slightly darker where planes visually stack.


Refine the edges and highlights


Edges are small, but they define the cube. A cube with clean edges looks crisp. A cube with soft or uneven edges can look handmade, clay-like, or worn.


For a digital icon style, use sharp vector edges. Add a thin highlight line along the top edge and a subtle dark line where the shaded faces meet.


For a softer illustrated style, blur only the shadow, not the face edges. Keeping the cube itself sharp preserves the geometry.


Try these simple highlight placements:


  • Along the top left edge if the light comes from upper left

  • Near the top face corner closest to the light

  • On the upper part of the medium side face

  • Very lightly along the vertical edge between side faces


Keep highlights controlled. Too many bright marks can make the cube look wet or plastic.


Experiment with color and style


Once the cube works in grayscale or a single color, start playing. A cube is a perfect practice object because the structure stays simple while the style can change a lot.


Try these variations:


  • Monochrome


Use one hue in light, medium, and dark values.


  • Neon


Use saturated colors, dark backgrounds, and glowing edge highlights.


  • Pastel


Keep contrast low and shadows soft for a friendly look.


  • Pixel art


Build the cube from blocky steps instead of smooth edges.


  • Clay style


Use soft shadows, rounded edges, and warm surface noise.


  • Retro print


Add halftone dots, grain, and slightly offset colors.


  • Transparent glass


Use low opacity fills, bright edges, and overlapping planes.


Color can also change the mood. Blue often feels cool and clean. Red feels bold. Yellow feels bright and playful. Purple can feel dreamy or futuristic. There is no single correct palette, so test several versions side by side.


A useful exercise is to duplicate the same cube five times and change only the colors. Then duplicate it again and change only the texture. This helps you see how much personality comes from surface treatment rather than shape.



Fix common beginner mistakes


Most cube problems come from inconsistent light, uneven angles, or too much detail. These are easy to correct once you know what to look for.


The cube looks flat


Increase the value difference between the faces. Make the light face lighter and the shadow face darker. Add a cast shadow if the cube needs to sit on a surface.


The cube looks twisted


Check the angles. In an isometric cube, matching edges should stay parallel. If one side slopes more than the other, the cube will feel warped.


The shading looks muddy


Use fewer colors. Beginners often add too many midtones, which makes the cube lose structure. Start with three clear values, then add soft transitions only where needed.


The texture hides the shape


Lower the texture opacity. The cube’s form should remain readable from a distance. If the texture competes with the shading, simplify it.


The shadow goes the wrong way


Return to the light source. If light comes from upper left, shadows should fall away from that direction. Highlights and cast shadows must agree.
